Chapter 45 Endnote

In this chapter, Jonathan is going to show you how to use EndNote, a reference management software. EndNote is an alternative to Mendeley (which was previously covered in one of the workshops). As a reminder, on the APA website you can find examples for many types of references. As it is a real pain to cite these correctly when doing everything manually, we would highly recommend using a reference management software such as EndNote. Your 3rd-year self will thank you for learning this skill early on.

45.1 Installing EndNote

In this video, Jonathan explains how to install EndNote.

45.2 Accessing Web of Science and importing a reference

Here is a video of Jonathan importing references into EndNote:

45.3 Exporting from Google Scholar to EndNote

In this video, Jonathan demonstrates how to get citations from Google Scholar into EndNote.

45.4 Adding APA7 style to EndNote output style

If your version of EndNote does not have the APA7 output style, here is how to add this style:

45.5 Manual interventions

Imported references are not always perfect. In my experience, the most frequent issues are abbreviated journal titles (when APA uses non-abbreviated ones) and article titles that are in Title Case (they should not be). These issues need to be corrected manually within EndNote.

45.6 More EndNote resources

You can find many additional EndNote resources online. For example, you can download a 600-page manual from the EndNote website. In addition, you can find some excellent EndNote training videos on YouTube.

45.7 Alternatives to EndNote

While you can use EndNote for free while studying, this will no longer be possible once you leave the University of Nottingham. Therefore, you might decide to go for a reference management software that you can continue to use after leaving the UoN. At present, the only alternative I would recommend is Zotero. Zotero is open source and free if you use less than 300 MB online storage (or if you don’t store your articles online).

What I do not like about Mendeley is that they have decided to encrypt their database, making it unnecessarily difficult for users to switch to another reference management software. While using (the old version of) Papers myself, I cannot recommend the more recent Papers by ReadCube either as online reviews of this Papers version are not particularly favourable.
